Xilinx Inc., (NASDAQ: XLNX) today announced its plan to provide a free test drive of its Integrated Synthesis Environment (ISE), the Xilinx® next generation design environment, to any engineer interested in upgrading their programmable logic design software to the faster Xilinx tools. Engineers interested in performing their own side-by-side comparison in this test drive can register for a complete conversion package which aids the process of migrating designs originally developed with Altera software. When customers decide to switch to Xilinx, they will also receive a $500 discount for ISE Elite software tools, as an additional incentive. Xilinx is offering a $100 gift certificate to any designer who can demonstrate that his or her production design compiles faster in the Altera's Quartus/II software than in the Xilinx ISE software. Switch to Speed
Altera requires their customers to use two different suites of design tools in order to target various devices from their portfolio. For instance, Altera customers who are creating a higher density design are required to switch to the new Quartus/II design tools, forcing them to learn and maintain an entirely new design environment. Xilinx supports the design of all of its leading high-performance FPGA devices such as the Spartan®-II ASIC replacement FPGAs and Virtex®-II Platform FPGAs, in a single design environment, making it easy to choose any of its leading devices.
Programmable Logic Leadership for Design
The Xilinx ISE tools are delivering the industry's fastest runtimes, highest clock performance, and support for the fastest and highest density devices, the Virtex-II Platform FPGAs. The Xilinx Alliance Series™ software is also available for the test drive for customers who prefer to seamlessly integrate their Xilinx design tools into their existing EDA environment. The Alliance Series software features the same ultra-fast runtimes, plus cross probing and error navigation tools that enable designers to navigate directly from design timing reports back to the schematic viewers within Synplicity's HDL Analyst and Exemplar's Leonardo Insight.

The ISE and Alliance Series tools used in the test drive provide architecture-specific device support for all Xilinx leading product families including the Spartan and Virtex series FPGAs, and XC9500™ CPLDs. Both software series are supported on Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows NT; and Chinese, Korean, and Japanese Windows. The Alliance Series software also supports Unix operating systems HP-UX and Sun Solaris.
